Saudi Arabia offers excellent preconditions for renewable energy solutions. Having one of the highest solar radiations worldwide – with up to 2,800 kWh/m2– the country is predestined for the implementation of PV systems. Since the energy policy changed in 2017, when the government set the target to diversify the energy mix and achieve 27.3 GW of renewable energy capacityby 2023 and 58.7 GW by 2030, the interest in investing into solar projects and benefiting from the power of the sun has significantly risen. As prices for solar energy technologies are constantly declining, this kind of clean energy generation represents an attractive opportunity for private as well as business customers in Saudi Arabia.
The first projects realised together with Energy Systems within the scope of the joint venture oursun Saudi Arabia were four sun2roof solar installations in 2019. Two 5.8 kWp PV systems were installed on the rooftops of private houses generating about 10 MWh of clean energy per year and thereby saving more than 5,500 kilograms of polluting CO2emissions annually. Also, a 12 kWp sun2roof solar solution, installed at a private property, provides 19.6 MWh of renewable energy per year and contributes to 11,620 kilograms of CO2savings during the same period. The biggest sun2roof project realised in 2019 was the implementation of a 123 kWp solar system on the rooftop of a local company. 440 modules were installed to ensure a clean energy generation of 207 MWh annually and a CO2savings of more than 120,000 kilograms per year.
meeco and Energy Systems are planning several more solar projects for 2019 and for the years to come, taking into account that the electricity consumption is steadily increasing in Saudi Arabia and the necessity for new energy sources is rising. Alongside some further small-scale sun2roof solar rooftop solutions and sun2safe energy storage and management solutions, the implementation of PV systems for commercial consumers from the agricultural or industrial sector as well as for public buildings such as schools or ministries is planned to further strengthen the sustainable energy development within the country.
