MEDIENKONTOR Dresden GmbH starts off the year with a new naming and visual identity project called “Durion”. Since November 2011, the Dresden-based PR agency has put in place a new line of services, namely Visual Identity and Branding along with its new tagline “Making content visible”. The request to create a holistic branding concept came from the Swiss-based, Clean Energy Invest AG. The client wanted to create a brand that would reflect the forward-thinking philosophy of a technology business and at same time produce an identity that is structurally different from the existing energy storage systems in the market.

To answer this need, MEDIENKONTOR first proceeded to the traditional research work and mind mapping in order to identify key concepts and naming leads. The “Durion” brand came from the association of the words “durable” and “lithium ion”. Filipe Webermann, in charge of the Visual Identity services at MEDIENKONTOR, explains: “In order to perpetuate these concepts, a bold and incisive wordmark was created with a strong d-shaped icon, allowing for an easy and instinctive cross-functional media implementation using this squared “flame” and thus generate the desired brand awareness”. Along with the “Durion” wordmark comes the slogan “Storage made smart”, which underlines the cleverness and uninterrupted remote control capabilities of these energy storage solutions. At the core of MEDIENKONTOR’s competencies is content editing combined with visual identity – this combination was fully used in the Durion solutions’ overview brochure as well as the website, both media where it developed the content and designed the layout.

“We had very little time to bring something to life and we were impressed with MEDIENKONTOR’s reaction” says Prof. Dr. Norbert Menke, Managing Director at Clean Energy Invest AG. “Within such a time frame, MEDIENKONTOR worked efficiently with us and managed to produce results that we are truly proud of – a strong and consistent brand identity that has already convinced potential clients to work with us” adds Dr. Menke.

MEDIENKONTOR’s work with Clean Energy Invest AG is not over, as the company plans to develop new sales tools, interactive marketing materials and deploy its first energy storage containers to clients in the next few months.

4 kWp solar, 16 kWh storage project and collaboration with Everest Ingeniería SRL for water pumping

meeco América Latina S.A., the Asunción-based and fully owned subsidiary of The meeco Group, has finalized its very first solar powered off-grid installation in South America and the first of its kind in Paraguay. A local cattle breading company Riacho-í S.A., contracted meeco for the project located near Rio Verde, in the Chaco region, Presidente Hayes province. While this system will be used for demonstration purposes and research, it also supplies daytime and nighttime power directly to the main farm offices, significantly reducing its fuel costs.
The Riacho-í site is equipped with 4 kWp of solar photovoltaic polycrystalline modules, mounted on a dedicated meeco-designed fixed structure which deliver power to the storage and control unit situated in the AlkubeTM, a thermal-insulated aluminum housing also developed by the meeco Engineering team. Top-tier components were selected for this off-grid project, including STECA charge controller, Studer inverter and Sonnenschein GEL batteries. The 4 kWp installation represents a big step into greening the farm’s energy sources, saving well over 5 tons of CO2 emissions per year in comparison to the equivalent emissions of a diesel generator.
Additionally, meeco América Latina also introduced a new concept, a 1.4 kWp mobile system that can either be used for remote use or coupled with the existing 4 kWp system installed at Riacho-í. Dr. Oliver Jann, President of meeco América Latina S.A., explains: ‘we created a “combination” system, with fixed and mobile components. When combined, these two components increase overall energy production for a fixed site. The mobile component, however, is mounted on a trailer and can therefore be used for other applications when necessary.’
One of the first applications for this mobile unit in Paraguay is solar water pumping. To provide a turnkey solution, meeco América Latina is working with Everest Ingeniería SRL, a local engineering company and representative of well-known Grundfos pumps. At Riacho-í, meeco combined the mobile solar energy generator with an SQFlex pump to remotely pump water and directly fill water reservoirs. The result is an all-in-one mobile pumping station that pumps up to 18 cubic meters of water per hour. Engineer Jorge Roa, General Manager of Everest Ingeniería SRL, explains that his ‘company his currently promoting the GRUNDFOS solar water pumping systems, which are already being widely used in the region (Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina) and have proven to be excellent for potable water pumping, cattle water, transfer from water reservoirs into tanks, irrigation systems in open channels and other remote applications. This solution is a great alternative to fuel-based systems and its payback period is rather short.’ On the strategic partnership with meeco, Roa adds ‘we benefit from meeco’s solar module procurement capabilities and installation expertise, and combine them with the flexible water pumping systems such as the GRUNDFOS SQFlex, that will eventually be installed in remote areas where traditional power supply sources are not available.’
In the upcoming months, meeco América Latina will expand its range of mobile and fixed water pumping systems while also participating in a second off-grid installation involving a public renewable energy supply project.

SunCarrier Services Hellas S.A., the fully owned Greek subsidiary of the Swiss-based meeco Group has recently contracted the installation of a new turnkey photovoltaic rooftop project. The project is located in Lakko Chatzi, municipality of Aspropyrgos, Attica, and will have a nominal installed power capacity of 60 kWp.

The project is owned by Mr. George Chatzis and will utilize 255 units of 235Wp BYD modules, an ALUMIL supporting roof structure as well as two KACO Powador 30000xi-XL-GR inverters. The installation is estimated to yield a total of 85.000 kWh of energy produced per year, which amounts to yearly savings of approximately 9 tons in CO2 emissions.

George Kitoudis, Country Director of The meeco Group in Greece and in charge of steering the latest project explains: ‘The construction will be executed by THRICON Energy Co. The installation is expected to be finalized and fully connected to the grid by end of 2011. Even though the Greek market is going to be more and more complicated to work in, we continue our engagement in Greece and will remain available as a reliable partner for photovoltaic projects, be it ground-mounted or as in the latest case, installed on roof-tops.’

Four years after its debut in the Spanish solar photovoltaic market, SunCarrier Services SL, the fully owned subsidiary of the Swiss-based meeco Group, relocates to a new office location in the Alicante area.
Situated in Playa de San Juan (Alicante district), the new office is just 20 minutes away from the Alicante International Airport by car and is well connected to the city center of Alicante via the local public transportation network.
The new facilities are part of a traditional Spanish ‘Finca’, which not only includes bright office spaces, gardens and exterior barbecue lounge area but also serves as the headquarters to the official meeco Equestrian Team stables. Another great feature is the 5 minute drive to the fine sand “Playa de San Juan” beach, the largest in the area with over 6 km length.
‘Finca meeco is the perfect definition of what a modern office space should be. At any moment, our employees can take some fresh air in the gardens, enjoy the sun on the rooftop’s deck chairs or even ride one of the five horses we have here” explains Eric Borremans, Managing Director of SunCarrier Services SL. “Moving from the city center to this new location ended up being very positive for all of us. We are convinced that such a working environment can play a role in favoring employee productivity and improving the daily office atmosphere” adds Borremans.

Please find below some impressions of the new office amenities (Photos by Elly Van Himbergen).
Last Monday 29th November, the official “Mise en service industrielle” notification from EDF was communicated with the first kilowatts flowing into the grid on that same day.
With the official grid connection notification comes the first major step into capitalizing the return on investment. EDF/SEI started effectively compensating each kWh produced and delivered to the substation. In these circumstances and upon signing of the Power Purchasing Agreement or “Contrat d’Achat”, the Prunu fixed ground-mounted PV installation was achieved in the legal time frame as defined in Art. 4 from French decree of 09/12/2010 and consequently, will benefit the Purchase obligation at the FIT of July 2006 granting a 42 EURO cent/kWh Feed-in Tariff.
‘Timely project execution according to planning has been a key success factor at Prunu’ says Eric Borremans, Head of project for The meeco Group. ‘Given the current PV French market climate, we are very glad to finalize the project with a 42 cents Tariff and convey the required trust to the project shareholders that meeco projects can be trusted’ adds Borremans.
One of the major events early this week that made the grid-feeding possible was the successful activation of the ABB Transformer Centers. Indeed, ABB recently signed the commissioning of 5 Transformer Centers, civil works engineering and the online connection with Ralos, the project EPC contractor. ‘The very final procedure we will soon take place as we are about to receive EDF’s Contrat d’Achat (Power Purchasing Agreement) for the power plant’ comments Jo Hanns Dieter Trutschler, Sales Director of the meeco Executive Board.

Below are some recent impressions of the site and its positive integration in the local landscape.

SunCarrier Services (SCS) Italia S.r.l., the Italian subsidiary of the Swiss-based meeco Group has finalized the transfer of seven photovoltaic-projects in October totaling 7 MWp. All of the projects are located in the region of Puglia, South West Italy.

“The seven projects were finalized and structured into meeco vehicle SPV companies and coordinated with local developers”, explains Claudio Alberti, heading the Italian operations for The meeco Group. “The EPC contractor is a+f GmbH, a member of the Gildemeister Group and a long time partner to meeco, with over 100 MW built in partnership around Europe.”

The projects’ installations, which have been partially equipped with fixed structures as well as with a+f’s SunCarrier single-axis tracking technology, are estimated to yield a total in excess of 11.000.000 kWh of energy produced per year, enough to feed the annual energy needs of over 3.100 families, avoiding the emission of 5.500 tons of carbon dioxide every year for the next 20 years.

All of the projects are already feeding the grid and have been awarded the 2010 Feed-in Tariff. Claudio Alberti concludes: “The combination of high radiation in one of the highest radiation areas of Italy and a favorable Feed-in Tariff make these projects extremely interesting from a return point of view.”

Active in the Italian PV market since late 2008, The meeco Group’s subsidiary has been continuously adding projects to the Group’s portfolio.

meeco América Latina S.A., the Asunción-based and fully owned subsidiary of The meeco Group, has won a major supply equipment contract in Paraguay. The Call for Proposals was originally published by INTN (National Institute for Technology, Standardization and Meteorology) last September to provide electrification of community centers for 10 off-grid Indian villages situated in the Province of Boqueron’s Chaco region. The project will be financed by Itaipu Binacional, owner of the world’s biggest hydroelectric plant.

This project represents a significant step toward increasing Paraguay’s use of renewable energy, with already 80% of its national energy coming from renewable sources. President Lugo declared this project of national interest, since it will provide great social benefit to over 620 families and 2700 people directly affected by the project. The electrification initiative will provide power to 32 government buildings including local schools, churches and health care centers. Lights, ventilators and some cooling devices will now be fully operational thanks to this renewable energy source, contributing to a brighter tomorrow for all the Indian villages.

meeco América Latina will supply top-tier components for a total project investment valued at $240,000. “We have been actively pursuing opportunities in the Paraguayan market for the last 18 months, and this is most definitely a major milestone for us and for the whole meeco Group” declares Dr. Oliver Jann, President of meeco América Latina S.A. “We strongly believe that Paraguay is set to become the nation with the highest renewable energy sources per capita in the world, and it can only motivate surrounding markets to follow its lead.” Adds Stuart Moss, Director for Off-Grid Solutions, “INTN should be complimented for soliciting advice, analysis, and ultimately equipment from leading renewable energy suppliers like The meeco Group. As a result, these remote villages will receive uninterrupted electricity and significant social benefit for many years to come.”
